TIPS for Autism

This was a very intense 3 day work shop. I learnt a lot of tips and ways children think. It was great to spend time with the child's parents and get to know them better. We are all wanting the very best for our children.
We covered these headings:
Day one:
*What is ASD?
*Changes to the diagnostic criteria
*Walking in their shoes
*Links to the  NZ curriculum
*Visual supports
*Team activities
* Social  communication
*How do we teach play?
*Play strategies
Day two:
*What is  communication?
*Expressive communication
*Receptive communication
*Communications strategies
*Thinking introduction
*Thinking strategies
*ASD and special  interests
*Individual  activity :special interests
*Special interests kits and demonstration
Day three:
*What is behavior?
*Preventative  strategies
*Emotional  regulation
*Positive  behaviour supports
*Functional behavior assessment
*Planning and develop a long term plan
This was a rewarding and very full 3 days. By the end we developed a IEP for our child that was whanau built with professional input too.
I came  back with a great understanding of how ASD children think and a better understanding of what life is like for them. We all think   communicating is easy but this course make you stop and think about the things we say. Sometimes simple instructions are not so simple.
If you ever get a chance to do this course DO IT !!!!!!

Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga - Staff Workshop Week 3

On Tuesday 5 May I Kiri took  staff workshop to refresher. The focus was to revisit the three main second language acquisition methodologies that we use to teach Te Reo Maori kupu and kiwaha.

We revisited the IRDPX and iPpit methodologies.  We revisited the Sandwich methodology which we use mainly for kiwaha/phrase teaching.  We also reconnected the 11 Principles of Instructed Second Language Acquisition (Ellis Erlam Sakui 2) with these methodologies.
We also discussed the Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga committees plan for our Matariki Celebration in Week 9 and gave the staff a 'heads up' in regards to Maori Language Week in week 2 of Term 3.

The revised e-asTTle writing tool.
This looks very interesting and well thought out. Will be interesting to do with my class next term. Although the manual and video sounds and looks complicated this will be intersesting.

House of Science.

                        House of Science

We had a very fun staff meeting today learning about a new resource for science. This was hands on experiencing what our children will be creating with these wonderful science kits. These will be available from Reap to order. James Street School is extremely lucky again to get these for free this term. We solved crimes, mixed powders and told stories using stuff. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Maple and Reap.

Nice one !

For our teacher only day we had a session on ways to communicate and having an active listener. We learnt how to let things go. Don't sweat the small stuff !!!!  She was energetic and motivating.
